Alejandro Majorkas Confirmed as New DHS Secretary
Newly confirmed DHS Secretary Majorkas is another in the line of firsts for this Administration, and in a very different way than the novel actions taken by the last Administration. Majorkas is not only the first Latino and immigrant to head the Agency, but also the descendant of a Romanian Jewish family who escaped the Holocaust and migrated to Cuba before coming to the United States.
His job is broad in scope. In addition to being in charge of carrying out immigration policy, he will be responsible for protecting the nation from white supremacist extremists. Under the Obama Administration, he served as the head of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). He will undoubtedly be more responsive to concerns about the role of the Agency from the perspective of humanitarian and democratic norms than any of his predecessors of the last 4 years.
